EW compiled a list of its favorite YA couples and Katniss and Peeta made the list! These two certainly have quite the relationship, which began, as stated below, “with a loaf of bread and an act of kindness.”
First Encounter: It began with a loaf of bread and an act of kindness…. Though Peeta, a baker’s son, made his first lasting impression on Katniss when he threw her a loaf of burnt bread that allowed her hungry family to eat, the two don’t really get to know each other until they are sent to compete in the nationally televised fight-or-die reality show/sacrifice ritual, The Hunger Games.
Defining Moment: With Peeta injured, ill, and on the verge of death, Katniss kisses Peeta knowing cameras will capture their courtship and sponsors will send them food and medical supplies. It’s her version of returning the favor.
Relationship Challenges: Because of her hard-scrabble background Katniss almost unwaveringly looks out for herself, so there’s little room for anyone else in her heart or mind — though a certain rugged hunting partner named Gale does confuse her feelings. Later in the series, a drastic shift in Peeta’s personality (after he’s tortured with tracker jacker venom) complicates the showmancers’ yin-ang-yang dynamic further.
Why They Work: Peeta is a fundamentally good-hearted, smooth-talking person with sensitivity that balances out Katniss’s edge, self-consciousness, and lack of social propriety. He truly loves her, which she needs and appreciates — even if it takes her a little while to realize it. —Lanford Beard
EW Caught up with Paula Malcomson, aka Mrs. Everdeen, who talks about filming ‘Catching Fire’ and reveals what first name she has given her character.
“There’s not a lot on the page,” Malcomson told me about the role, but adds, “When I read those books, I was excited about the possibilities and felt like this could be a really fun role.” Although Malcomson quickly realized she had become a little too invested in creating weight to her performance.
“In the first movie, I was doing it for real. I didn’t want to show up and be all pretty. I wanted to go in there and be hungry, be oppressed. I quickly realized I was acting like I was in a different film from the rest of the cast [laughs]. I just think there’s a heaviness that I was bringing that I don’t know if it was the story they were trying to tell in this. But there’s such a great character progression with her. She has this rebirth throughout the series, so I play it out in my head a lot.”
In creating an elaborate backstory for her character, Malcomson also created a first name for her character. “I named her Clara,” she tells ETonline. “I don’t know why, but that just came to me.”
So, what do you think of Clara being Mrs. Everdeen’s first name? I have to say that by looking at her, I can definitely see her being a Clara, but maybe that name is a bit too common for Katniss’s mother? Or maybe not. Let us know what you think!
EW released the first official photos from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire today! The latest cover features Finnick and Katniss in their arena uniforms.
Another photo of Finnick and Katniss was also released!
”Pressure, pressure, the pressure is on,” says good-natured Sam Claflin about stepping into the net of District 4’s charismatic golden boy. ”I’m on Twitter and so many people are like, ‘Don’t mess this up, or we will kill you.’ People are just worried that I’m not going to be as sex god enough as Finnick should be. I’ve literally had four months of eating nothing but chicken and asparagus. I just want a burger and a beer.”
Late this afternoon, they released even more photos! This time featuring Katniss, Peeta, and Gale.
”Jen and Liam have amazing chemistry,” says director Francis Lawrence of his young stars. ”They have a nice moment right before Katniss is reaped that is the very first thing we shot. And then when Gale has been brought in from the whipping, that’s another really nice moment they have alone.” ”This the book where you have to understand the pull Katniss feels to both Peeta and Gale,” say producer Nina Jacobson.
”These are kids growing up in war who physically, emotionally can’t love somebody,” says Jennifer Lawrence about the uncomfortable triangle between District 12’s battle-weary Katniss, Peeta, and her childhood friend Gale that began in The Hunger Games. ”Katniss thinks she can’t have a crush on a boy because she’s worried about survival every single day. And she can’t be a normal 16-year-old meeting her friend out in the woods and practicing kissing because that’s not the world that they live in.”
This is certainly an exciting day fans! What do you think, Tributes? To read excerpts of interviews from cast and crew members, head over to EW!
UPDATE: Even more photos have been released! This time we see Plutarch Heavensbee and Haymitch, Prim and Mrs. Everdeen, and President Snow! I don’t know about you, but my inner fangirl is going insane right now!
