Fantastic video from Tennessee: Interview with Francis Lawrence

Hunter Phillips, who was an extra on the first film (he stood two spots behind Peeta during the Reaping scene) has put together a phenomenal video from the special screening in Tennessee on behalf of the Hunger Games Fireside Chat Podcast.

Most notably, go about four minutes in and watch the wonderful interview with Francis Lawrence. What a NICE GUY!

Great job, Hunter!

Pictorial on THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Fan Camp Weekend

From Saturday, November 16th through the red carpet U.S. premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Monday, November 18th, fans got a chance to camp out for the weekend and not only hang out with fellow fans, but also meet some of the stars of the sequel of The Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire.  700 fans slept out in tents that were set up specifically for them.  They got to show their support by bringing their own signs depicting favorite quotes and/or characters from the books.  On Saturday, the fans got to meet and get an item signed by Stephanie Leigh Schlund (Cashmere) and Willow Shields (Primrose Everdeen).  Then on Sunday, Sam Claflin (Finnick Odair), Jena Malone (Johanna Mason), and Jeffrey Wright (Beetee) arrived for a group signing for the fans.  Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark) and director Francis Lawrence also came by as a surprise to sign for the loyal fans as well.

Various activities were to be had, such as taking a picture with the Catching Fire poster in the background and raffle drawings hosted by KIIS FM.  A Catching Fire T-Shirt, sponsored by Time Warner Cable, was given to each participating fan.  And fans were able to watch The Hunger Games movie on the big screen that overlooks the Nokia Plaza square in preparation for the sequel.

The highlight, of course, was the red carpet event itself, which brought out actors from Catching Fire as well as a few others, including The Hunger Games author herself, Suzanne Collins!  Afterwards, all campers were able to get a ticket to see the movie.

Check out the images from the red carpet!

Francis Lawrence on Making a True Adaptation

LA Times Hero Complex recently talked to Francis Lawrence about taking over for Gary Ross and the challenges of making a faithful adaptation.

But condensing a 143-page script into a 2-hour, 15-minute movie is going to call for hard decisions. “It’s a real challenge to keep everything in,” Lawrence acknowledged. “There are a few scenes that didn’t make it.”

“I really liked the book, and I really wanted to make the book. I didn’t want to reinvent,” he said. “There is always some true adaptation to be done when you are distilling a 400-page book to a two-hour movie, but I think everybody will be really excited.”

Based on what we’ve seen already in trailers and TV spots, I think he’s right.  Personally, I find that everything looks just like I imagined it would–really can not wait to see this film!

Francis Lawrence and Jena Malone Talk Catching Fire with Sci Fi Magazine

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire made the cover of December’s issue of Sci Fi Magazine, and thanks to Quarter Quell we have a few excerpts from the issue!

Francis Lawrence on Mockingjay being made into two films:

“I think they are two distinct stories. I think the objectives are very distinct. One is about getting Peeta back and one is about revenge, which is why I think they easily separate out. It allows us to explore what we need to explore within each of those stories instead of jamming them both into one.”

And here’s what Jena Malone had to say about Johanna’s relationship with Finnick:

I think the relationship between Finnick and Johanna is so important that any little moment we have together we went for it because they are sole survivors. They’ve grown up together and I think they’ve bonded because of that. I think it’s one of the last beautiful relationships in Johanna’s life where it’s someone she can actually rely on.
