MTV’s Five Key Scenes From the Catching Fire Trailer

The folks at MTV, much like us, have watched the Catching Fire trailer over, and over, and over again! From the multiple viewings, they have selected five scenes to examine closer–a top five, so to speak.

Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 5.20.41 PM

Meet Finnick Odair
The first footage of Katniss’ biggest ally in the Quarter Quell arena was probably the most anticipated reveal. Unfortunately, all we saw was Finnick’s sly smile before the tribute parade. Fortunately, he was shirtless. Now that we’ve seen Sam Claflin’s toned torso, will the fervor that he’s not beefy or hot enough die down? Dude is strikingly attractive and physically imposing. What more do you want? We also saw several more returning tributes, whom Haymitch reminds Katniss are “experienced killers” and not just scared teenagers. That Katniss has some stiff competition is especially evident in the montage of the tributes all training in their high-tech facility.

Effie Trinket Empathizes
For the most part, the other Capitol residents don’t notice or care about what’s going on in the country around them. They’re blissfully unaware of President Snow’s political machinations surrounding the Games — and his quest to quiet the rebellion brewing underneath their noses. District 12 liaison Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) has clearly grown fond of the young competitors she ushered through the process the year before, and her worried, emotional look to Katniss when she realizes her victor will have to face death once again is telling: the Capitol employees tasked with carrying out Snow’s wishes can’t ignore what’s going on, and soon the rest of the idyllic city will realize the threat to their cushy way of life.

MTV Reveals Gif of Katniss, Peeta, and Effie

In what is turning out to be a pretty exciting week leading up to this Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, and first Catching Fire teaser trailer, MTV has just released a gif of Katniss, Peeta, and Effie on its tumblr! So what do you think?  I’m a terrible lip reader so I can’t figure out what Effie is saying.  Any ideas?

MTV’s Catching Fire Trailer Wish List

In just under ten days we’ll finally be able to feast our eyes on the Catching Fire teaser trailer, and I know we all have a list of things we want to get a peek at during those highly anticipated  2 1/2 minutes.  Like us, MTV also has a wish list and has shared the top 5 things they most want to see.

Catching Fire Teaser Poster Official

5. Sweeping dystopian vistas
“Catching Fire” director Francis Lawrence is known for transforming an average setting into serious eye candy, which means that we’re dying to see how the Districts, the Capitol and the rest of Panem have evolved to suit his style.

4. Fiery fashion
Anyone who’s read the books knows that one of the most-anticipated costumes in “Catching Fire” is Katniss Everdeen’s wedding dress, which undergoes a flaming transformation at a pivotal moment.

3. Finnick freakin’ Odair
After the months-long agony of false reports, unsubstantiated rumors and various other fakeouts surrounding the “Hunger Games” sequel’s most eligible bachelor, it’s time for “Catching Fire” to stop toying with us and provide a nice, juicy look at Sam Claflin as Finnick (beyond that Capitol portrait…). Preferably naked Finnick.

2. A peek at the arena
Without spoiling anything, let’s just say that no trailer would be complete without a glimpse of the unique, deadly, dastardly Quarter Quell jungle arena.

And finally, the number one thing we’re dying to see during the “Catching Fire” teaser debut…

1. Seneca Crane’s beard.
On Philip Seymour Hoffman. THIS MUST HAPPEN.

I have no idea what will be in the trailer, but if we see Seneca Crane’s beard on Philip Seymour Hoffman I, for one, will be surprised!  Tell us if you agree with their list and let us know what you are most looking forward to seeing!

District 3 Tribute Ian Nelson Lands Guest Role in Teen Wolf

Ian Nelson, The Hunger Games’ District 3 Tribute will soon be back on our screens. The 17 year old will be playing a younger version of Derek Hale, played as an adult by Tyler Hoechlin, in flashbacks during the new season’s eighth episode, E! Online is reporting.

Ian Nelson

They had this snippet to say about the character:

But don’t expect to see  the same intense and broody Derek we all know and love today as Nelson plays Derek at 15 years old, when he was a  popular and charming star athlete; this is Derek before disaster struck his family, turning him into a lone werewolf always in search of a new pack.

It’s always exciting when fandoms collide, isn’t it? Will you be checking Ian out in his new role when Teen Wolf returns on June 3 on MTV?

Francis Lawrence Discusses Adapting ‘Catching Fire’, The Scene He’s Proudest Of, ‘Mockingjay’ and More!

Francis Lawrence recently chatted with MTV’s Josh Horowitz about all things Catching Fire such as stepping in for Gary Ross, Sam as Finnick , the Arena, and more (you can find the interview here).  Well, lucky for us, there’s more!  Check out some of the snippets that didn’t make it into the interview.

Catching Fire Behind The Scenes

Lawrence on changes that occurred during the adaptation process:

“No, not really, I would say that it’s a really faithful adaptation. You know, whenever you’re adapting something that’s a 12- or 14-hour read down to something that has to be around two hours, there’s going to be some cuts. We definitely made some cuts. I don’t want to go into that, but we did it with Suzanne, and I would say that it’s very, very faithful. We tried to get as much as we could in there.”

Like he says, there’s bound to be cuts, but it’s great to know they were made by Suzanne Collins’ side!

Just what scene is Lawrence most proud of?

“It’s interesting because there’s a very small blur—I want to say it’s a paragraph long in the book—but the moment in the arena when the gamemaker starts to spin the cornucopia, and I’m very proud of that. We designed a very cool sequence and created a spinning island, and that’s going to be very, very cool. So that’s kind of fun and very unique. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s cool.

“You know one of the very first things we shot that I like quite a lot is, there is sort of a goodbye before she goes into the arena with Liam that I like a lot. And it was actually—we shot it because we needed summer foliage and summer flowers and things like that. We actually shot it while we were in prep. Very first thing we sort of went out into the meadow, out in the mountains in north Georgia and shot this sequence over three or four hours or so, and I really like it. I think it’s really nice. Jennifer and Liam are really good in it. It’s very nice.”

Tell me you’re not dying to see the rotating cornucopia scene!

And just how is Mockingjay coming along?

“Nina, John, Suzanne and I have gone through the book and created the beat sheets for it. And started going through all that and at least marking our initial ideas of what the moments would be and how it all breaks down. And Danny Strong, who’s writing the first one, is working now. So yeah, we’ve actually done a fair amount of work. We’re starting to think about where we could shoot it and all of that.”

There’s more where this came from so we highly recommend you go to MTV and read up!  Get excited guys, we’re only 303 days away!
